Carr Cultural Center Programs Calendar of Events Exhibits


The Artists Mentorship Program, "Jazz Studies Program", matches the nationally renowned Professors of Jazz of Michigan State University College of Music and MSU student mentors, who are majoring in jazz studies, with artistically gifted and talented youth.  The intensive hands-on music sessions hone the student's jazz skills an further enrich their study of music.  This program is designed to encourage young artists to preserve the African American cultural arts tradition by embracing the music not only for its intrinsic value, but also for social and individual values.
 

The Jazz Studies Program consists of two programs:
Jazz String Ensemble
& Jazz Combo

 

For 20 weeks, beginning October 20, 2007 through April 26,2008, students will hone their jazz skills and further their study of music
These weekly sessions includes:

Musicianship:
Sight-reading, Applied Theory, Technical Studies, and Solfege

Jazz/String Combo Class:
Repertoire, Sight-reading, and Theory/Improvisation

Ensemble Combo Rehearsal:
Build Performance, Etiquette and Develop Repertoire Improvisation Skills Team work & Communication

Orientation & Auditions

October 20 at 11:00 a.m.
WCCCD (northwest Campus)
8551 Greenfield Detroit, Michigan 48228

Auditions are required for this program.
Students should be prepared to:

  •  Play a prepared piece (Jazz, Contemporary and Classical)

  •  Sight Read

  • Improvise over 12 bar blues

The Jazz String Ensemble class begins at 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
@ WCCCD (northwest campus)
The class is specifically for string players excluding Bass.

The Jazz Combo class begins at 12:00 - 3:00 p.m.
@ WCCCD (northwest campus)
The class training will be offered in Bass, Woodwinds, Percussions, Piano, Brass and Voice.

 

Student Performances
Include Noel Night in December, the Michigan State University Jazz Spectacular in April, and the Stars of Tomorrow.  The "Stars of Tomorrow" is a dynamic culminating event that highlights the work that has been completed by the students of the Artists Mentorship Program in all disciplines over the past year.  All events are open to parents, family and the community.
