The Arts League is committed
to being recognized as the premier African and African American cultural
arts center in the nation. The organization is focused on
increasing organization capacity, audience development, identity
building, diverse programming, collaborations, volunteer development and
community support. The Arts League continues to assess ways to
expand its breadth and scope in developing, presenting, promoting and
preserving the African and African American cultural arts traditions.
Engaged in a three-year capital campaign,
the Arts League is committed to develop a cultural arts center in
Detroit. The Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center will be more than a building, but a strong
institution built on a solid foundation. Thousands of new
"friends" will be encouraged to become members of the Arts
League organization.

The Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center will be:

creation and presentation of the arts, dedicated to the African
American experience within our multicultural community

education in The Arts League of Michigan

organizations, and artistic programs

The Center will contain:
- 47,500 sq. ft. of flexible use
space
- Courtyard theater with seating
for up to 333 guests
- 3 multi-purpose visual arts
studios
- 2 exhibition spaces
- 2 performing arts rehearsal
studios with audio/television studio recording capabilities
- 2 dance studios convertible to
"black box" performing spaces
- 2 classrooms
- Retail outlet and Cafe
- Archival storage area
- Administrative are capable of
providing business services to resident artists/arts organizations
The Arts League preserves African and
African American cultural art traditions by showcasing their significance
and contributions to the world.
Programs that demonstrate our commitment
to preserving artistic legacies include:
- The Idlewild Clubhouse Show honoring
the people and times of the Harlem Renaissance
- Keeping the Faith: Preserving our
Spiritual Heritage, an archival and preservation program
- This Far By Faith: Celebrating
Detroit's Gospel Music Heritage
