Art for the
People
- A
visual and performing arts presenting program to engage audiences of all
ages in the appreciation and enjoyment of African American cultural arts
traditions. This presenting program provides venues for artists to
showcase their work through public performances. It has become
part of one of the Arts League's core programs. This annual juried
art exhibition is both a local and regional touring program.
Components to Art For the People are:
- Performing Arts
including the Jazz @ the Center and
educational programs, and All That Jazz, an annual multi-artist jazz
festival, presented at the Detroit Festival of the Arts, including
Spoken work and dramatic presentations, music and dance concerts.
- Community Arts Exhibits
showcase the works of minority artists. Recent exhibitions
include: Rock My Soul: The Black Legacy
of Rock and Roll, commissioned and organized by ALM in
collaboration with The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum,
features the work of 10 Detroit-based African American artists and
tells the story of the African American musical contributions to the
music know as Rock and Roll. This exhibition is currently on a
multi-stop national tour; and
Freedom, a 30-work
exhibition of fine art featuring works that celebrate and
commemorate the struggles of diverse groups of people in finding
their freedom.

Artists
Mentorship Program
This
year-round training curriculum matches practicing professional artists
with interested, gifted and talented youth in grades 8 through 12.
Through intensive, hands-on experience, students develop their artistic
and creative skills while also nurturing a boarder range of life skills
such as teamwork, public presentation and planning:
